HDR iconHigh Dynamic Range (HDR)

From the Most Brilliant Brights to the Deepest Darks

HDR—or high dynamic range—is designed to show a greater range contrast in an image or video. UHD screens let you really see this difference in picture quality. Because of HDR, images with high contrast can be shown with much greater clarity and more detail in the shadows and highlights. Imagine the visual drama that’s delivered when the deepest darks meet up with the most brilliant, brightest white possible. That’s the formula for the gorgeous, dramatic contrast and greater detail offered by UHD Premium’s HDR imagery. You’ll no longer have to strain to see what’s going on in those darker movie scenes because HDR helps imagery pop right off of the screen for the ultimate visually immersive experience. UHD Premium’s standards for HDR truly elevate the viewer’s experience from awesome to ultra-awesome.

4k icon4K Ultra HD Resolution

Yes, It’s Really Four Times Sharper Than HD

4K Ultra HD is the newest high resolution format offering images that are about 4,000 pixels wide, hence the name. Technically, "Ultra High Definition" is actually a derivation of the 4K digital cinema standard which is 4096 x 2160 4K resolution. 4K TV offers four times as many pixels (3840 X 2160) than full HD televisions. Four times the amount of pixels ( 8,294,400 to be exact) means four times the level of detail. This increase in pixel density adds sharpness, striking detail, smoother curves and more nuance and realism to an image and allows larger screens to be viewed from closer distances without the grid-like structure of individual pixels becoming visible.

The differences revealed by UHD Premium’s 4K imagery can be astonishing. The total end result is a clearer, crisper and more detail-rich picture than standard HD.

Color Bit Depth iconColor Bit Depth

More Colors Mean Color Transitions That Are More Natural

Think of bit depth as the number of possible shades of each color. The higher the bit depth, the more natural the transition between colors. Higher bit depth and a wider color gamut offer color transitions that are more natural. The Premium standard for UHD is 10-bit, which allows presentation of more than 1 billion colors.

To bear the Ultra HD™ Premium logo. a minimum 10-bit color depth must be supported.

Immersive Audio icon

Immersive Audio

Experience Multi-Dimensional Sound That Surrounds and Astounds

With Immersive Audio, sounds are perceived as coming from infinite points around and above the listener rather than just from traditional speaker locations. The result is multi-dimensional sound that envelops the listener and enhances the viewing experience by more closely correlating sound to the action on and beyond the screen. This multi-dimensional sound, when paired with 4K UHD, creates a viewing experience that virtually transports the viewer into the scene. Immersive Audio has the power to elevate the viewing experience, so that sound is experienced —and felt—rather than simply heard.
